Tips for New Blood Donors
If a person has never given blood before, there are several things he or she can do to make this simple process even easier.
- Get a good night's sleep the night before your donation.
- Eat a good breakfast or lunch.
- Drink plenty of liquids like milk, juice, water or soda ahead of time.
- After donating, go about your normal daily activities, just avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.
General Donation Guidelines
You must be:
At least 17 years old
Weigh at least 110 pounds
Have no history of exposure to hepatitis or AIDS
Last donation: *At least 56 days (8 weeks) ago;
*At least 112 day if double red cell donor.
You cannot donate with the following conditions or medications
Acupuncture with an unsterile needle with 12 months
AIDS or a positive test for HIV
Symptoms of common cold today
Piercing of an ear or other body part with an unsterile needle with 12 months
Fever
Flu with symptoms
Gonorrhea within 12 months of completion of treatment
Hepatitis - history of viral hepatitis after 11th birthday or prospective donor has or has had a confirmed positive test for HBsAG or has or has had a repeatedly reactive test for anti-HBc on more than one occasion
Jaundice after 11th birthday
Monoucleosis with history of jaundice or hepatitis
Pregnancy
Syphilis within 12 months of completion of treatment
Tattoo within 12 months
Use of Tegison for psoriasis - permanent deferral
Use of Soriatane for psoriasis - within 3 years
